Gemstones have been used in conjunction with astrology for thousands of years and
are considered to receive their potency from the cosmic energies of various planets.
Vedic astrology and the Ayurvedic system of medicine tell us that certain planets
can affect body organs and other parts of the body. The planets are also said to
exert their effect on our minds and subtle parts of our consciousness. In addition,
their specific placements in an individual’s horoscope chart indicate the path of
his or her destiny.
Most astrologers affirm that wearing a gem can help ward off the malefic effects
of a planet that causes suffering, by reducing that planet’s cosmic energy. However,
this is largely regarded as a misconception. Gems never ‘decrease’ a planet’s energy
or its cosmic rays. But they can help in weakening its ill effects. Therefore, the
selection of a gem must be seriously pondered over by the astrologer to determine
whether it will truly have a positive effect.
Planetary Gemology should be studied and used by astrologers to offer viable remedial
measures for mitigating the malefic effects, and increasing the beneficial influences
of planets. This can be achieved by strengthening planets that can counteract certain
rays that are causing problems, or by strengthening planets that rule positive areas
of life but are weakened due to their placement in the horoscope.
For the purpose of prescribing gemstones, the ‘sidereal’ zodiac should be used by
astrologers for studying a horoscope. This system is based on the fixed positions
of stars and constellations, not their relativity to the earth and sun as in the
‘tropical’ zodiac. Gemstone therapy may not be applied to the tropical positions
or errors of judgment will be made in recommendations. Gem therapy is a powerful
and remedial measure. In some instances, wearing the wrong gem can cause serious
physical and/or mental disorders. It is best if gemstones are bought only in consultation
with a qualified Vedic astrologer, planetary gemologist, or an Ayurvedic practitioner
well-versed in this science.
