Spiritual Meditation - or Listening to God's Words
What
is meditation? Quite simply, meditation is focusing our undivided attention
on something for a period of time, be it a few moments, or a longer
while. A spiritual meditation is when we focus our undivided attention
on spirit. Spiritual meditation is when we receive God's words. When
we pray to God, we are talking, and God listens. In order to hear God's
replies, we must be silent, and hear God's words. And we can do that
in spiritual meditation.
Spiritual meditation is one of the most relaxing, most spiritually rewarding
acts a human mind can indulge in. The more we practice meditation, the
stronger our bonds become with our Source of Spirit.
In the Eastern tradition, there are many different disciplines of meditation.
For those who have never meditated before, and who would like to enter
the meditative state here, can do so with ease. Some people like to
create an atmosphere which, for them, is conducive to meditation by
lighting joss sticks, using aromatic oils, lighting candles, playing
soft instrumental music or doing something similar which for them signifies
a ritual. If you would like to do that, please go ahead and then return
to this screen to read on…
Sit comfortably, and keep your ankles uncrossed if you are seated in
a chair. Look at the calm and serenity of the waters here. You can either
keep looking at the visual of the calm waters, or you can memorize its
details and then close your eyes and allow the serenity of the visual
to relax all the cells in your body.
Now just watch your breath without attempting to control it in any way.
Watch how it enters your body through your inhalation, and watch how
it exits your body through your exhalation. Keep watching your breath
for five minutes. If your attention wanders, gently bring back your
awareness to your breath.
After five minutes, concentrate on the word "HARMONY". Now ask yourself,
if harmony had a shape, what shape would it be? Do not force any thought
into your mind. Allow
whatever shape comes in, to be there. Now ask yourself silently, if
harmony had a color, what color would that be? Once again, allow a color
to come spontaneously into your mind without forcing it. Ask yourself
silently, if harmony had a sound, what sound would it be? Allow the
sound of harmony to gently enter your mind. Stay
with this visual in your mind, of a shape, a color and a sound - all
signifying harmony to you. Now
ask yourself silently, what are the spiritual qualities of harmony?
Let the attributes of harmony enter your mind.
Gently, again, focus your awareness on your breath without attempting
to control it in any way. After a minute, slowly open your eyes.
Whatever you felt the spiritual attributes of harmony are, should be
written down by you. Now for the next 24 hours, before your next meditation,
try and live the spiritual attributes of harmony in your everyday life.
As you utilize the knowledge you gain through meditation, more will
come to you.
