Introduction
Mythology at the Movies
Mythology is an inherent feature of the imagination of humans, surfacing whenever
a story is told. The contemporary world may not literally believe in myths, but
they need them more than ever. In many forms, but especially in comic books, the
sword and sorcery genre, and in the movies, the mythic imagination is alive and
well.
indiayogi examines some of the more important cinematic endeavours in this direction
in our special section, Mythology at the Movies. Most of the films selected are
not overtly mythical; it is just that the great archetypes of mythic thinking overlay
most good narratives with surprising results. This section looks at the films solely
in terms of their mythic structure and content as well as the ever-relevant lessons
they can teach us. They are therefore akin to reinterpretation more than reviews.
We are confident that you will gain some fruitful new perspectives and a deeper
vision of looking at material that may seem to have quite another outlook. Welcome
to the movies.
