I have been writing through countless earth sojourns, and once I have put the research notes aside, the writing itself is almost a mindless activity, the effortless result of the whole brain intent. I now understand that the more I look at a crystal, even in a forgetful way, the more it comes to life, expressing its hidden mysteries through a subterranean dialogue, crystal-to-crystal. Not only is this work then more enjoyable, more relaxing, there is greater awareness surfacing in interaction with the keyboard and mouse; the electrical charge of the crystals blends harmoniously with the electrical impulse of the PC, and also with that of my own holographic system! New practical knowledge begins to emerge in little bytes, a shade here and a whisker there, as amazing grace begins to imbue my work, my meditation and all life itself. At other times, it happens with crystals sitting on my bed, under the pillow, or on the window sill, while I am unconsciously plugged out of the here-and-now.

Transparent Polished Quartz Egg In Silver Container

This state of serenity begins to extend and encompass my being while watching infinite crystal images on the world wide web, as though the Earth were whispering in my ears through them all. And a mystic friend has her own method: She looks at the images I send regularly, one at a time, and later gets messages about them in the course of her deep meditations.

That is how she informs me that a particular large crystal cluster is full of Himalayan energy, which surprises me, since I have picked it up from a Deccan quarry… until I remember that I was grounded, immobilised with the monster crystal, waiting nearly six long hours into the night for the car to pick me up at the back of beyond.

I was fortunate at the time to be sitting right under a huge guru tree (Audumbar, ficus racemosa) in front of a little open-air restaurant besides the highway. I later understood that it was a blessed time of visitation of Shiva’s blessings, attracted by the power of the sacred tree and magnified through the crystal, which was sitting fully exposed on a table top in front of me. And the Himalayas, being worshipped primarily as Shiva’s abode, resonating to the spiritual vibes of the Lord of the Lords, naturally communicated the same exalted vibes to the Great White Deccan mineral! “You are to keep this one for yourself,” urged the friend. I’m not sure about that though, since currently, crystal grace seems to be overflowing in my life.

The rough and tumble of crystals
An important note to remember is about the highly valued perfection of crystals in the international market. Perfection has its own place in human affairs, especially with an eye to ‘market value’, while the universe operates on the principle of openness and exposure to weathering. This is witnessed in the grandeur of huge trees with unique wind-swept silhouettes, or the awe-inspiring erosion sculptures of ancient cliffs and canyons.

Most crystal sellers take extra care to ensure that the crystals they ship are perfect and undamaged, and rightly so. Perfect crystals, especially the highly polished and faceted ones have their uses in channeling and in transmission of energy in healing and metaphysical work. This is vital when amplified energy charge of the crystals has to be focused and directed in a precise manner. Even natural crystals, not shaped by the human hand, except in removal from the rock matrix, are valued for their perfection, which contribtes to an aesthetic display.

On the other hand, many crystal sellers do in all honesty offer crystals that have suffered some scratching and chipping due to unavoidable circumstances, often found thus in their natural state in the quarries and mines. Such stones are spectacular or unique in other respects, and their worth to genuine crystal lovers ought not to be neglected. Such crystals often possess fairly powerful fields of vibrations, with many uses in purifying the environment and also in metaphysical work.

Acceptance of their imperfection, and appreciation of the light and colour that they nevertheless possess, gives rise to genuine compassion, a rare quality that is cherished in the spiritual dimensions.

The Japanese Zen principle of Wabi Sabi, or conscious detachment from over-investment in perfection, is easy to recall when looking at the barnacle-encrusted, scarred exteriors of the great oceanic whales. The debate between lovers of pedigree pets and streetside waifs is not yet settled to satisfaction. So also with crystals in healing and meditation, it is the wonderful asymmetry and imperfection in shape, colour and structure that makes for gently unique powers and properties. Who knows, for all that, it may be possible to strike a happy bargain with the seller for an otherwise out-of-reach, perfect crystal.

Broken Agate Chalcedony

Many crystal sellers I know keep the imperfect crystals for themselves. So this note is for the buyers: It is sensible to ask for perfect crystals, undamaged in shipping, at the time of purchase. At the same time, once they are yours, crystals that are chipped or scratched in handling, over the years, need not be discarded. They continue to subtly influence our environs in positive ways!

It would be disappointing to treat all but the most expensive crystals as mere showpieces. Especially with children, pets, and people who may be ill, occasional tumbles and bumps do occur, and accidental damage must not be treated as a total heartbreak. Perhaps this is an opportunity to cultivate detachment, and to explore newer facets to using such crystals.

In my work, the imperfect ones are full of rare surprises. I have rescued from construction sites, quarries, blasting and stone crushing sites, many good specimens bearing a few scratches and bumps. These are the old veterans of the crystal world, wizened looking and full of wisdom and healing, with a gift of kindness and mature compassion.
