“Love
is a second life; it grows into the soul, warms every
vein, and beats in every pulse.”
-Joseph Addison
A warm greeting to all our readers. The New Year hasn’t
really started on a good note, with the worst ever earthquake
striking Gujarat. A calamity that has brought the whole
nation to its knees and rendered many distraught and homeless,
with most of them having lost their loved ones.
It’s these tender bonds of love that tie us together and
light up our lives. The beginning of this new month brings
with it a pleasing and exciting scent of freshness - the
freshness of love. With Valentine’s day round the corner,
the cupid’s arrow is ready to hit many a heart with the
timeless joy called Love.

- An undefined emotion |
What
is love? Why do we seek love? Why does our heart and
soul connect with the other? What is it that we feel
within us when we love someone? These are questions
that rarely have answers. True love needs nothing.
When you truly love, you transcend notions of sex,
status, caste or community. It is something we feel
within us and makes one able to respond to the inner
beauty present in everybody. To find out if you really
love somebody, think of him/her in the midst of any
difficulty. The answer will come to you. It must happen;
otherwise your love may not be true love. The object
of love is to seek truth, to understand it and become
part of it. Conditional love isn’t love! The Lord
incarnated in human form as Krishna, delighted the
Gopis by His presence, as they danced around Him,
while He remained unconditioned by any of the happenings
around. He was compelled by the Force of Love to dance
with the Gopis.

| The
history of Valentine’s Day |
Every
February, across the country, candy, flowers and gifts
are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name
of St. Valentine. But who is this mysterious saint
and why do we celebrate this holiday? The history
of Valentine’s Day is shrouded in mystery. One legend
contends that Valentine was a priest who served during
the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II
decided that single men made better soldiers, he defied
Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young
lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered,
Claudius ordered that he be put to death.
According to another legend, Valentine actually sent
the first ‘valentine’ greeting himself. While in prison,
it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a
young girl - the jailer’s daughter - who visited him
during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged
that he wrote her a letter, which he signed ‘From
your Valentine’, an expression that is still in use
today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends
is still murky, the stories certainly emphasize his
appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and, most importantly,
romantic figure. |

In the middle of the eighteenth century, it was common
for friends and lovers in all social classes to exchange
small tokens of affection or handwritten notes on
Valentine’s Day. By the end of the century, printed
cards began to replace ready-made cards, which were
an easier way for people to express their emotions
in a time when direct expressions of one’s feelings
was discouraged.
