THE SUN AS GOD
From the most primitive societies to the more
recent new-age religions, the Sun has continued to be worshipped
for its life-giving and life-sustaining powers. While the Pueblo
Hopi Indians perform a daily ritual which they say nourishes the
sun and keeps it (and by implication our world) alive… in India,
millions of people do the 'Surya' (sun) namaskar every morning at
sunrise. One of the most powerful and widely-chanted mantras by
Hindus is the 'Gayantri Mantra' invoking the sun "to enlighten and
stimulate human understanding".
Across cultural myths, the Sun rides across the sky in a golden
chariot drawn by seven white horses - each one a personification of
the day of the week. The wheels of his chariot have 12 spokes signifying the
months of the year. The rays of the sun, by Hindus, are described as the
many arms of Surya reaching out to bless every corner of the universe.
In India, some
of the most beautiful temples like the Konark Temple of Orissa,
the jewel-like wonder at Modhera and the now totally ruined temple at Martand….are
dedicated to the worship of 'Surya'.
When J.M.W. Turner, the famed English artist, lay dying... he murmured that
he found faith in these four simple words: "The Sun is God".

On X-mas Eve indiayogi will wage its War for Peace
The first war of the third millennium, paradoxically, is not a war
for territorial conquest or political gain. This war is being waged
to root out the evil of terrorism perpetuated by extremist fanatical
organizations who are killing innocent men, women and children
around the world. This is a war…for peace. In his address, to be broadcast on the eve of X-mas,
to the congregation at indiayogi - Fr. Lancelot Pereira of the Society of Jesus separates the grain
from the chaff, to bring home and reinforce ideas which are fundamental not only to Christianity but
which are also cherished by men and women of every faith - the world over.
