The heavenly river Ganga had been ordered to descend on earth so the planet could be revitalized and made fertile by her powers. Furious at having to leave her heavenly abode, Ganga flowed down with great force. Shiva seeing its destructive intent, captured the waters of Ganga in his matted locks and wound them up on his head thereby trapping Ganga before she could vent her fury on earth. Here, in a rare image, she is seen pouring her bounty in a restrained and calm manner. Serene Shiva is captured by the artisan in a state of bliss in this lovely brass statue.
